The Smith & Kearns was created in 1952 by Gerbert "Shorty" Doebber of the Blue Blazer. Shorty named it after two oilmen who were regulars at the bar: Smith and Curran. Over the years the original name and ingredients of the drink have changed somewhat but it is still very tasty and a popular mixed drink.

How to Make the Smith & Kearns – Best Drink Recipes

The loud atmosphere in bars reportedly led to the name "Curran" being misheard as "Kearns" (sometimes spelled Kerns). Over time the original crème de cacao was also replaced with a coffee liqueur. This may have been due to the growing popularity of the White Russian in the 1960s which made Kahlua a star of the bar.

Whether you drink it with coffee or chocolate the Smith & Kearns is a delicious drink. It’s light on alcohol so it’s a nice happy hour drink and the soda and cream combo gives it a sort of ice float feel. It’s actually one of the most refreshing cream cocktails you can make. If you add vodka to it it becomes a Smith & Wesson (a nod to the gun manufacturer and the added kick of the cocktail).

"I was skeptical about this recipe. Coffee liqueur and cream go so well together that I thought diluting it with soda water would be a step backwards. But this drink is surprisingly good! It's more refreshing and just as satisfying as a White Russian. Adding it to your rotation!" —Tom Macy
