How to make your own sourdough starter • Tasty
Starting a sourdough starter isn’t difficult but it does require patience. It may seem daunting that this recipe takes 1-2 weeks to make but it only takes about 2 minutes of active prep time per day and you’ll reap the rewards when you pull your first (and every subsequent) loaf out of the oven. The heart of baking great sourdough bread is a healthy predictable starter that makes the bread taste better. My foolproof method is outlined in the recipe below. I use rye flour because it’s packed with nutrients and protein to encourage wild yeast and bacteria to grow and make your starter strong from the start but organic whole wheat flour works well too. Make sure your water is not chlorinated as this will inhibit microbial growth. Use filtered or distilled water or let your water sit overnight (cover with cheesecloth to keep out dirt) to let the chlorine evaporate before adding it to your starter.
