Starbucks is no stranger to experimenting with new menu items or even rethinking some of its tried-and-true practices. From announcing new flavors of its ready-to-drink canned coffee to changing up the look of its cold brews Starbucks has shown that it’s not one to rest on its laurels when it comes to its beverage options. It’s clearly a brand that doesn’t mind shaking things up.

A big part of Starbucks’ ever-changing appeal is its seasonal menu which has caught the attention of just about everyone from social media influencers to specialty coffee lovers. Starbucks turned heads when it unveiled its bright purple lavender cool drink as part of its spring menu and it looks like another brightly colored addition is coming to the menu this summer — and one with an interesting textural twist. When the menu goes public on May 6 it will feature what CEO Laxman Narasimhan is calling “our first texture innovation beads” (per Business Insider ). In other words you can get popping boba at Starbucks!
Boba is of course nothing new. But it must be said that Starbucks is steering clear of the traditional chewy tapioca pearls that are famous in Taiwanese bubble teas and instead implements gushy popping pearls. You may have seen them in frozen yogurt shops or even bubble tea restaurants as an alternative to tapioca pearls but now you get the chance to try them in a Starbucks refresher.
There’s no official word yet on what kind of drink this will be. When asked by Chowhound Starbucks only confirmed that a new drink was indeed coming without specifying what that might be. However several videos on TikTok including this one from barista @ariannakaila have seemingly leaked that this new concoction is a bold blue raspberry-inspired refreshment made with coconut milk and raspberry pearls. The creator of the above video praised it as not being overly sweet but it certainly seems like a promising addition to Starbucks’ beverage family alongside its various cold brews and other refreshments.
