As a food blogger I use my stove almost every day without giving it much thought. It’s easy to take things like multiple burners and good ventilation for granted. (Well except when Jack is cooking – then we have to hastily open every window to avoid the fire department showing up).

In other parts of the world women cook on small fires in enclosed spaces with no light or ventilation. Their kitchens are filled with smoke making it difficult (and unsafe) to prepare meals for their families. This Mother’s Day Equal Exchange is working to donate energy-efficient stoves to hundreds of families in Uganda as part of the Uganda Stove Project. These stoves provide families with better safer cooking conditions and also reduce their weekly firewood costs.
