Taco Bell is deploying AI in more drive-thrus: What does that mean?

If you’ve visited a drive-thru recently and noticed that things look a little different you’re not alone. Restaurants have begun testing forms of artificial intelligence (AI) in foodservice in an effort to simplify the ordering process for employees and create a smoother experience for guests. While you might expect tasks like phone call routing to be automated some restaurants are taking it a step (or two) further.

Last year Domino’s partnered with Microsoft and announced plans to use AI technology to help managers with administrative tasks. And they’re not the only restaurant to get in on the trend. Chipotle has been testing multiple AI kitchen assistants that can prep ingredients and even put together orders. And while it may be a few years before that technology hits the mainstream there’s one thing on everyone’s mind right now: AI ordering.

Using AI-powered assistants in the drive-thru to take orders frees up workers to focus on preparing food and tending to diners. But when new technology comes into play it’s not uncommon for there to be some hiccups along the way. McDonald’s AI-powered drive-thru issues have gotten so much attention that the chain recently pulled the technology from its stores.
