Ease of use was rated out of ten based on how close the app was to the ability to point the phone at a plant and press the take a photo button, then provide results without additional steps.
Accuracy was assessed by examining 14 plants from my tropical garden, which included varieties of palms, plants more commonly found in UK tropical gardens, more unusual plants and succulents. Scores for each plant were assigned as follows:
0 – incorrect
1 – close (for example, he identified it as a ginger but as a hedychium rather than zingiber)
2 – very close (for example, he identified it as zingiber zerumbet rather than zingiber Mioga)
3 – on site

So, out of 14 factories, there was a total potential of 42 points. The highest rated app had a score of 30. However, all scores were based on the first plant suggested as people can rely on it more when in doubt, but some apps also provided the correct answer more low in their suggestions.
