Thanks for 20 years of Steam!

We launched Steam on September 12, 2003 with the goal of making it easier for game developers to connect with their audiences and for gamers to find cool games. In the 20 years since, we've learned a lot, adding features and tools, hosting sales and events, and incorporating your feedback to make Steam what it is today.

To celebrate, we've prepared a look back at the history of Steam, contextualized with key moments in technology and pop culture and accompanied by fun new illustrations, and are also putting our own works on sale as a little something in addition. The timeline is full of historical facts, fun facts, and the best games released each year, many of which join the celebration with sales of their own.
