Have you ever wanted to serve up a delicious bowl of guacamole only to reach for an avocado in your fruit bowl and find it rock hard? Typically it takes about a week for a hard avocado to ripen. If you don’t have that much time or patience you might be wondering how to speed up the ripening process.

Whether you need ripe avocados to spread on toast slice for a salad or grain bowl or mash into a big bowl of guacamole there’s an easy trick that will cut down on the ripening time. Believe it or not it requires two things you probably already have on hand: bananas and a brown paper bag.

An easy way to ripen avocados faster is to grab some bananas. “Bananas emit ethylene gas the gaseous plant hormone in fruit that induces ripening” explains Rachael Laenen a sixth-generation farmer and Director of Farming and Operations at Kimball Avocados.
