The main religion is Orthodox and many of the preparations surrounding the holiday are deeply rooted in Christianity. Many people even fast for 40 days between November 15 and December 24 with Christmas Eve meals being dairy and meat free.
It is customary to serve an odd number of dishes on Christmas Eve (5 7 9 or more) with honeyed fruits and nuts being among them.
There should be a bread made without dairy products called pitka with a coin hidden inside. The head of the household burns incense and blows it around the house and the table to free the house from evil spirits. Some families keep the tradition of saying a prayer before eating.
