Brunch is a popular excuse to drink during the day and why wouldn’t you enjoy a sunny Sunday morning? There’s one problem with breakfast drink pairings though and that’s the fact that we rarely talk about them. There’s been an incredible amount of attention paid to pairing wine and cheese but little recognition for the countless other drink pairing possibilities out there. It’s time to improve on that.

Cocktail recipes for breakfast brunch or anytime

Wine lovers will definitely want a wine-brunch pairing but for those looking for lighter flavors cocktails are the way to go. Since brunch menus often focus heavily on dishes like eggs Benedict omelets and frittatas it’s most helpful to focus on pairing cocktails with eggs. Eggs deserve special attention since their mild flavor can be overwhelmed by many drinks.

Chowhound spoke to four food and drink experts to get their take on this delicate pairing. Jayson Goldstein food and beverage director at Vela Seaport and Deck 12 in Boston; Charly Naranjo sommelier at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach hotel; chef Nicole Brisson of Brezza and Bar Zazu in Las Vegas; and Amanda Davenport wine director at Noisette in Denver all weighed in on their favorite cocktail and egg pairings. They generally recommended light drinks most of which featured citrus. There was one unsurprising standout: the mimosa.

A consistent theme across all the expert opinions was that brunch cocktails should be light as egg dishes are often rich and filling. They put a particular spotlight on Champagne cocktails with Amanda Davenport explaining "A cocktail with bubbles is great with the texture of eggs." Additionally Champagne can help your stomach process your brunch which is especially beneficial if you've just come from a night of drinking. As Jayson Goldstein noted "The bubbles help settle your stomach and prepare you for that hangover meal your body is craving."
