The word “espresso” immediately conjures up images of bustling Italian cafes filled with people drinking pitch-black coffee from small ceramic mugs. These cups known as demitasse or espresso cups are specifically designed for sipping espresso. Their thick walls help keep the espresso hot but the shape matters too. “They’re typically narrower at the bottom and wider at the rim to help retain heat while enhancing the aromas” explains Tom Valentine quality manager for Crema Coffee Roasters.
