Growing up in New York I never had a pizza with meatballs. Scratch that: I had never heard of a pizza with meatballs until I was an adult. Let’s take it a step further: it never occurred to me that a pizza with meatballs was even remotely possible. To me pizza was what you got by the slice after school and meatballs were what you ate at home on a weekend night if you were really lucky. Pizza was for eating out; meatballs were home-made.
It wasn’t until I tried the meatball pizza at Motorino and then Best Pizza in Williamsburg that I realized how great the idea is. It’s two Italian-American favorites all rolled into one spectacularly comforting dish. But like all mashups it takes a little finesse to get it right. Here’s how I make mine.
