At the end of the year every grocery store in America has floor-to-ceiling displays of brightly colored boxes filled with panettone. Many assume it’s simply the Italian version of fruitcake and they’re half right. The Northern Italian holiday treat is made from a sweet brioche-like bread studded with dried fruit or chocolate chips. While you can eat it Milanese-style—a thick slice with your morning coffee—most Americans enjoy it as a sugar-dusted fruit dessert. You can of course make your own panettone but that’s usually left to the experts.
