Moussaka is a popular dish in Greece and abroad. It is usually made with layers of minced eggplant and a béchamel sauce. However there are also other variations of the dish with different ingredients which differ from region to region.

The exact origins of moussaka are unknown but it is thought to have Arabic roots and may have been inspired by a Levantine dish called musakhkan. The addition of a French béchamel sauce is said to be the contribution of Greek chef Nikolas Tselementes in the early 1900s.
