How to Keep Berries Fresh and Mold-Free

Sure you could whip up a quick cobbler or batch of berry jam to use up large quantities of fresh blueberries raspberries blackberries etc. but freezing them is the perfect option for preserving fresh berries in bulk for months to come — and it’s a simple act of kindness for the future you. When it’s the dead of winter and fresh berry season is a distant memory there’s nothing better than pulling out bags of frozen fruit with all that juicy flavor and nutritional value still intact.

Unlike many other home preservation methods like pickling and canning freezing fresh berries requires no special equipment or skills and couldn’t be easier or more breezy. All you need is a little freezer space and freezer-safe containers like baggies or jars for a quick two-step preservation method that keeps that pesky mold at bay.

To best prepare your fruit pick and remove any stems or leaves. Sort any unripe berries from the package and rinse them clean. Then place them on towels and pat them dry thoroughly. If you want to cut your strawberries now is the time to do so rather than when they are frozen. Once the berries are prepared and dried place them in a flat layer on a cookie sheet and slide them into the freezer for a few hours until they are completely frozen.
