The Biggest Mistakes You Make When Mixing Cocktails at Home

To avoid accidentally committing a canned cocktail faux pas Chowhound spoke with Molly Horn the lead mixologist and spirits educator for Total Wine & More an independent retailer of fine wines beers and spirits. When asked for her expert opinion on canned drinks she raved about their versatility and shared one essential tip for ensuring they’re enjoyed to their full potential. “My best advice is to serve them nice and chilled even if you want to serve them over ice so they don’t get watered down when you add them to a glass of ice” Horn says. Just like with certain liqueurs a little time in the fridge or freezer can make all the difference when it comes to serving canned cocktails.

Part of the appeal of ready-made cocktails is that they can be sipped straight from the can or enjoyed with fresh garnish and in fancy glasses. But however you serve them Horn’s advice is clear: Chilling a canned cocktail is essential for its full enjoyment. After all there’s nothing worse than a lukewarm watered-down drink.

Luckily these ready-to-drink alcoholic beverages are easy to keep cold — especially since they’re generally smaller than bottles of hard liquor. Exactly how you store them will depend on your specific situation. Of course the most standard practice is to refrigerate canned cocktails. (Just be careful about putting cocktails in the freezer as they can explode.) However if you’re throwing a big party and don’t have enough fridge space for all your drinks you may want to consider a trusty cooler or two filled with ice.
