We all know hot chocolate as the warm rich drink we enjoy by the fire on a cold evening or after winter activities like ice skating and skiing. But have you ever thought about the origins of this delicious drink? The history of hot chocolate goes back a long way and over the years the drink has changed from cold and spicy to warm and sweet.

As early as 500 B.C. the Mayans were drinking chocolate made from ground cacao beans mixed with water cornmeal and chili peppers (among other ingredients)—a very different version of the hot chocolate we know today. They mixed the drink by pouring it back and forth from a cup to a pot until it formed a thick foam then enjoyed it cold. Although the chocolate drink was available to all classes of people the wealthy drank it from large barrels with spouts that were later buried with them.
