In February 2021 we ranked international cuisines by the number of dishes tagged on Instagram and Japanese cuisine topped the list with over 15.5 million hashtags. Italian dishes followed with 14.7 million hashtags and Indian cuisine came in third.

A year later we decided to compare the numbers and see which dishes and cuisines have become more popular since our previous analysis. It turns out that Italian and Indian cuisines have been the most popular cuisines on Instagram over the past 12 months surpassing Japanese cuisine in popularity growth.
Yet Japanese food still tops the all-time rankings and has the highest number of tagged posts on Instagram – over 18 million.
When it comes to food Instagram is by far the most influential social media platform with literally billions and billions of posts about food. #Food alone has been used in almost 500 million Instagram posts while #foodies has over 200 million posts.
