In this episode of MakeMineMusic, Marc Daniel Nelson shares the one thing he does to each vocal while mixing. If it's too bassy, muddy, or too harsh, the dynamic EQ will tighten up and eliminate glitches from your vocal recordings.

Multiband compressors and dynamic EQs are some of the most useful tools available to audio engineers. They allow dynamic control of defined frequency ranges, providing some of the features and benefits of equalizers and compressors. Their ability to correct "problem" frequencies in a detailed and generally transparent manner makes them extremely useful for balancing a single sound or an entire mix.

However, these two processors are often confused because they operate under similar concepts and are used in similar scenarios. In this article, we'll cover the technical differences between dynamic EQs and multiband compressors, the general uses of both, and when you should use one over the other.

Digital multiband compressors are designed to work like their analog counterparts. First, the entire frequency content of the signal is divided into several bands, usually three or four. These bands pass certain sections of the frequency spectrum and, on most plug-ins, resemble bandpass filters on an equalizer.

Dynamic EQ is quite similar to multiband compression, with many dynamic EQ plugins using a common language found in compression.

Dynamic EQs and multiband compressors are extremely similar, and it's no wonder they're often used interchangeably.

The simplest way to differentiate them is that a multiband compressor functions primarily as a compressor, but with some aspects of an EQ. A dynamic EQ works primarily like an EQ, but with some aspects of a compressor.

Multiband compression works like normal compression, but can act independently on separate frequency ranges like an equalizer. A dynamic EQ band works like a standard EQ band, but processes the signal non-linearly like a compressor.

Whether you use a dynamic EQ or a multiband compressor in your next project, both offer benefits that make a mixing engineer's life much easier. These processors can be used to control frequencies in a transparent and musical manner, and using them in the right circumstances is far more time efficient than writing in gain and EQ automation.

The balance these processors can help achieve and the time saved can make your mixing and production process much smoother.
