The History of the Americano Cocktail

Of course you can top the Americano off with as much soda water as you like and this will affect the strength of the cocktail. As a rough guide if the total volume is about 5 ounces this Campari cocktail weighs in at a mild 9 percent ABV (18 proof).

The cocktail recipe is simple: equal parts Campari and sweet vermouth are poured over ice and topped off with soda. It’s about as refreshing as a Campari cocktail gets and the bittersweet flavor will delight your taste buds. That’s not to say the Americano is for everyone. The flavor profile is definitely Campari which is bitter and not to the inherent tastes of many Americans. But if you give it a try and train your taste buds to enjoy Campari the Americano will quickly become a favorite.

A classic cocktail the Americano was first served in the 1860s at Gaspare Campari's bar in Milan Italy. It was originally called "Milano-Torino" because of the origins of its two main ingredients: Campari calls Milan its home and the sweet vermouth was made in the style of Torino Italy. The cocktail was later renamed because of its popularity among American tourists around the turn of the 20th century and before Prohibition.
