The issues with Spotify and them not paying artists fairly are getting pretty old, but I feel like I have something to contribute to the discussion. I haven't heard many people make concrete suggestions for how the entire music streaming ecosystem could be improved, and I found a few ideas that I wanted to share here.

So basically: yes, Spotify doesn't pay artists fairly – but what could they do differently other than just "pay more"?
I think the problem with the current state of the music industry goes way beyond just per-stream royalties.

My last point is mainly this: music has become a commodity and the way people consume it gives it very little value. So, if music were to have a higher financial value, people would probably have to consume it in a different way. And streaming platforms such as Spotify or Apple Music could use strategies to restore value to music, for example by introducing a level of scarcity in streaming.

00:00 How much should music be worth?
00:36 1: The situation is complex
01:17 2: A very simple answer
01:53 3: The music industry is evolving
02:57 4: A fairer payment algorithm
05:53 5: Spotify pays
06:37 6: Scarcity gives value
