While some people have become quite familiar with their air fryers over time this trendy kitchen gadget should still be considered a modern marvel. This contraption can heat up all sorts of foods in just 10 minutes giving them a deliciously crispy perfectly fried texture without any added fats or extra time. But because it’s so new there’s probably still a lot you don’t know about your air fryer. For example have you ever tried preheating it for better results? You might have to preheat an oven before you cook in it but have you ever considered that the same logic could apply to an air fryer?

Do you HAVE to preheat your AIRFRYER? I tested it!

This cooking tool is a relatively new invention so it’s possible we’ve all been doing it wrong from the start. But is this really an air fryer trick we wish we’d known about sooner or an unnecessary step in the cooking process? Well the answer depends on what you’re cooking. While some foods can benefit from preheating others can’t. For example some foods that would normally benefit from a little extra searing and charring like grilled items like burgers can actually taste even better with a little preheating as that warm circulating air helps to crisp up the outside. Foods that you want extra crispy and fried like chicken nuggets or French fries can also benefit from the extra heat.

While some dishes taste even better in the air fryer after a little preheating the same certainly doesn’t apply to other options. For example if you’re only reheating leftovers like pizza or potatoes skip the preheating step. Dishes that dry out quickly like fish or juicy chicken breasts should also skip this optional addition. And finally dishes that benefit from a shorter slower cooking time like baked potatoes shouldn’t experience the extra heat so they can retain their moisture. So don’t make the big mistake of preheating here either.

If you want to preheat your air fryer the process is much the same as with an oven. Simply set your air fryer to the temperature your recipe requires and let it heat up. Make sure to leave the basket in the machine. After letting the fryer heat up for a few minutes (3-5 minutes is best) you’re ready to start cooking. Every air fryer is different and some models even have a preheat setting so use it if it’s available.
