Absinthe is no ordinary drink. The spirit has quite the dark and gloomy reputation. The drink is often associated with the Belle Epoque period in Paris where absinthe was a popular drink among artists and the working class in the bustling city. And while absinthe is often mistakenly categorized as a hallucinogen it is nothing more than an incredibly strong drink.

How to Drink Absinthe

That said the recent resurgence in the drink’s popularity calls for a much-needed refresher course on the proper way to prepare absinthe. Sure there are a number of creative ways to enjoy the drink. For example you could always swap out your vodka for absinthe in your next martini. But if you want a truly authentic absinthe experience there’s a good very Belle Epoque way to go about things.

For a perfectly prepared glass of absinthe you will need a 30ml glass of absinthe 90-140ml of cold water a sugar cube or about a teaspoon of sugar and a slotted spoon. To prepare it pour about 30ml of absinthe into your glass and cover the glass with a slotted spoon. Next place a sugar cube on the spoon and pour water over the sugar cube. Once the water has been poured and most of the sugar has dissolved dip your spoon into the glass and stir to dissolve any remaining crystals. And voilà! You have a cloudy sweet cup of perfectly prepared absinthe.

Now it may seem like a lot of work to enjoy a glass of absinthe but don’t worry this method is worth it. While the ingredients are simple the effect of the added water and sugar transforms the drink from a pure liquor into a delicious and refreshing beverage. Believe it or not water is perhaps the most important ingredient in this preparation. The added water does more than just dilute the alcohol flavor of your absinthe it also enhances the flavor of the aromatic oils in the drink (think anise and wormwood).
