You'll never throw away an onion skin again after watching this

Luckily the process is pretty simple. All you need to do is gather your discarded onion skins wash them dry them and then bake them at a low temperature of about 150 degrees Fahrenheit for three hours. You can also use a food dehydrator. Once your onion skins are cooked grind them into a powder. You can do this with a variety of tools from a mortar and pestle to a blender. If you don’t have access to such tools you can also grind the dried skins with your hands. Just make sure to grind them into a fine powder. Once you do this you’ll have a great batch of onion powder that will last for up to a year if you store it properly in an airtight container.

Of course onion skins aren’t a one-trick pony when it comes to cooking. While many home cooks simply toss their onion scraps into their compost pile (which isn’t a bad idea since onion skins make a great addition to a compost pile) don’t overlook their benefits as an ingredient in many kitchen projects. For example if you don’t have any extra onion powder to hand you can always use your onion skins to make a delicious stock. They can be added to chicken stock or vegetable broth along with other discarded vegetable parts like carrot peels and garlic peels.

But you can always do double duty with your homemade onion powder by adding it to your broth. The concentrated flavors of your onion skins are perfect for the flavorful aromatic soup base. You can also add the homemade seasoning to any number of dishes like garlic mashed potatoes or as a topping for a creamy Alfredo pasta. And flavor isn’t the only benefit of making your own onion powder. The homemade seasoning is also rich in antioxidants and contains many vitamins and minerals putting it above and beyond the spices you’ll find in the spice aisle of your grocery store. Plus repurposing ingredients that would otherwise end up in the trash is a great way to get the most out of your ingredients. The flavorful seasoning you get isn’t bad either.
