How to Grow an Endless Supply of Basil

Fresh basil tastes like summer to me. The bright green and tender leaves with their intoxicating aroma fit into all kinds of summer dishes from caprese salad to fresh pesto and much more. It just isn't summer without it.

The problem is that once the herb is picked (by a grower or by you as a gardener) its days are numbered. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve bought a clump of basil at the grocery store only to find it wilted the next day with multiple black leaves. This has sometimes put me off buying basil: I usually only pick it when I want to use it as soon as possible.

And while I had accepted basil’s quick-to-wilt nature as inevitable I learned something valuable after speaking with Jenn Frymark the Chief Greenhouse Officer at Gotham Greens. Basil could and does last a long time! I’ve just been storing it wrong.
