The long Memorial Day weekend is widely regarded as the unofficial start of summer—a.k.a. barbecue season. It’s the perfect time to gather friends and family and breathe in the delicious aroma of grilled goodness. Everyone wants to talk about meat but a truly great barbecue means the sides have to be just as delicious as the main course and nothing says summer like sweet corn. It can be a delicious side dish on its own or the base for a vibrant condiment like avocado corn salsa (perfect if you’re grilling shrimp for tacos).

We need to try this brilliant corn husking trick GMA

The problem with corn is always the husking. Cleanly removing the entire husk without disturbing the corn itself can be tricky and labor-intensive. But you can take the pain out of this chore with the help of an unexpected tool: your microwave. A quick spin in the microwave will loosen the husk and allow you to slide the entire cob right out. You can even steam the corn in the microwave if you don’t want to cook it or don’t have room on the grill.

The reason it’s easier to shuck corn in the microwave is because of the steam. As the corn spins around in the microwave steam will build up under the husk causing it to loosen from the kernels. You can create even more steam by soaking the corn cobs in a little water beforehand. To do this start by cutting off the stalk of the corn just above the first row of kernels cutting off a few inches. This will make it easier to slide the corn out of the husk at the end. Then place the corn on a microwave-safe plate and you’re ready to steam.

You can cook the corn in the microwave until it is fully cooked. To do this turn the corn on high. This will take about three minutes for every two ears of corn. The corn will be very hot when it comes out of the microwave and you will need to let it cool down a bit until it is safe to touch. Then you can simply shake the corn out of the husk. You can remove the silk with a potato brush and then you are ready to eat.
