Costco’s chocolate-covered almonds are lauded as a beloved treat making them impossible to snack on all day long. While most people know that the chain’s signature chocolatey nuts are part of its successful Kirkland brand (which followed several failed attempts) there’s another company involved in their production. Blommer Chocolate Company is the largest chocolate manufacturer in North America and it’s largely thanks to the Chicago-based brand that Costco customers can stock up on Kirkland’s roasted milk chocolate-covered almonds.

Though Blommer operates on a massive scale Costco shoppers likely aren’t familiar with the company. That could be due to the Windy City chocolate company’s tendency to keep quiet about its customers as reported by the Chicago Tribune . Founded in 1939 by the Blommer brothers — Henry Sr. and his entrepreneurial brothers Al and Bernard — the cocoa bean processor produces an incredible array of confectionery creations — from powders and syrups to dark light and white chocolate for a variety of uses including baking sugar coatings and ice cream toppings. In May 2024 Blommer closed its original production plant in Chicago (via the Chicago Sun-Times ). While the smell of chocolate wafting through the factory’s air is undoubtedly missed the company remains headquartered in the city.

Costco's Kirkland Signature chocolate-covered almonds may be just one of countless items Blommer makes but neither brand seems to view the joint effort as an afterthought. In fact the two companies have been working to solve problems in the chocolate industry.

The saying “Rome wasn’t built in a day” certainly applies to Blommer Chocolate Company which has continued to grow in size over its nearly 100-year history. When the Blommer brothers co-founded the chocolate company they probably didn’t expect Blommer Chocolate Company to grow to the size it did. When Henry Sr. rose to CEO and Chairman he would see his company grow into one of the largest chocolate manufacturers in the world.
