If you like a bargain and want to feel like you’re beating the system learn which frozen yogurt toppings give you the best bang for your hard-earned buck—and which ones will weigh you down (and cost you more). I did a little experiment to find out. The results are a little obvious but can help you stay within your “working range.” There’s nothing worse than being surprised by an $8 calculation that you thought would be less than $5 because you added half a bar of Hershey’s Cookies ‘n’ Creme.

Warning: I can't afford the toppings at Yogurtland

In my experiment I weighed out scoops of 21 toppings commonly found at frozen yogurt shops. The amounts aren’t perfect but life like froyo is a balancing act. Here’s how they did it. Heavier toppings like cherries and boba weighed in at about 2 ounces per scoop with cherries coming in at 2.2 ounces. Just under the 2-ounce mark Reese’s cookie dough strawberries gummy bears and jelly beans weighed in at anywhere from 1.8 ounces per scoop (cookie dough) to 1.6 ounces per scoop (jelly beans). Yogurt chips candy corn Skittles and Swedish Fish all weighed the same at 1.4 ounces per scoop with peanuts coming in at 1.2 ounces per scoop.

Cheesecake Oreo shavings graham crackers and walnuts weighed 1 ounce per scoop; chocolate cake almonds and ground peanuts weighed 0.8 ounce per scoop. The lightest toppings I found in this experiment were coconut flakes (0.6 ounce) Froot Loops (0.6 ounce) and marshmallows (0.4 ounce).

During this experiment I was reminded that cereal is like cotton candy: whipped sugar air. Froot Loops Lucky Charms marshmallows and Frosted Flakes all come in at under 0.6 ounces per scoop. Another light topping coconut shavings can be handy for those who like fruit but don’t want the extra weight in their bowl. However coconuts (like olives) are drupes—not traditional fruits. Perhaps that’s why their shavings don’t weigh as much as other fruits. If you like fruit—or fruity cereals—these toppings are inexpensive.
