1) Disable CD-ROM Repository
If you are installing Debian 11 using a DVD, you must complete this step. Or you can skip this step and move on to the next step. The problem is that if you installed using a DVD, every time you choose to update something you get an error message saying "the repository cdrom does not have a release file". version" will be displayed.

2) Configure Sudo user
The next important thing you need to do is to install sudo package in the system to get administrative privileges. You also need to add your user to the sudo group.

3) Install all Debian 11 updates
Open terminal and run under commands,

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade -y
Once all updates are installed, reboot the system once using the following command:

sudo restart

4) Install Synaptic Package Manager
While the apt command helps you install packages from the command line, Synaptic is a GUI that lets you install applications easily. It is feature-rich and gives you access to over 7,000 packages

5) Customize Desktop Settings with Tweak Tool
As the name suggests, the Tweak tool is used to change desktop settings in Debian 11. Tweak is part of the default installation of the operating system.

6) Enable firewall
Even though Linux is more secure than Windows, you should still enable the firewall for added safety and security. In Debian, UFW (Uncomplicated Firewall) is easily available as the best firewall manager.

7) Install the required software (Skype, VLC, etc.)
Debian 11 does not come with all applications, but only the applications and tools needed to run the operating system along with other basic applications. Therefore, you need to install all the required software yourself.

8) Install FileZilla and email client
To install filezilla on Debian 11, run the following apt command,

sudo apt install -y filezilla
Once filezilla is successfully installed, you can access it by searching for filezilla in activities.

9) Speed up startup time
If only Debian 11 is installed on your system, you can speed up the boot time by changing the grub timeout value to 0 in the grub file.

11) Enable GNOME Extensions
GNOME is a beautiful desktop environment and GNOME extensions provide additional functionality to your system. To install GNOME extensions, run

sudo apt install -y gnome-shell chrome-gnome-shell

12) Install Timeshift Backup Tool
Surprisingly, Debian 11 does not have any backup tools or programs. You can see many backup programs in the software center. Search for Timeshift and install it on your system.
