According to a new study published June 10 2024 in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition the best diet for your health may also be the best for the planet. The research suggests that eating a diet rich in plant-based whole foods and limited meat and dairy consumption can reduce your risk of premature death by 30%. To reach these conclusions researchers from the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health examined the long-term effects of adhering to the dietary recommendations laid out in the groundbreaking 2019 EAT-Lancet report. Called the Planetary Health Diet (PHD) the eating pattern emphasizes plant-based whole foods and allows for moderate meat and dairy consumption. On a planetary health plate half of the plate is filled with fruits and vegetables while the other half is made up primarily of whole grains plant proteins unsaturated vegetable oils and a small amount of animal protein (if present).
