Tinto de Verano – Spanish summer wine
The fir eats / Julia Hartbeck
The name tinto de verano translates to “red wine of the summer” in English. It is a refreshing wine cocktail served throughout Spain during the warmer months. Although similar to sangria it is easier to make and has less alcohol making it ideal for sipping on a warm afternoon at a pool party or on the beach. Tinto de verano has become so popular in Spain that it is sold in cans. If you order it at a bar when you visit the country be aware that you may receive this version in a can; it won’t necessarily taste bad but it will not taste like the freshly made version.
This Spanish cocktail was originally called un Vargas after the man who invented it. In the early 20th century Federico Vargas concocted a mixture of red wine and lemonade as a way to provide refreshment to those seeking refuge from the hot sun at his establishment El Brillante in the city of Córdoba. Artists guitarists and bohemians found this refreshing drink so delicious that the word quickly spread throughout Spain and tinto de verano became synonymous with the feeling of relief from the Spanish summer heat.
