The south of Italy is indeed responsible for a great many Italian cultural stereotypes: think of the typical Neapolitan man singing passionately in the street and wolfing down his pizza Margherita while waving his hands as he tries to continue talking. This is of course a cliché but it does illustrate how rich the south of Italy is in cultural images and traditions.

Southern Italy consists of six regions: Molise Campania Puglia Basilicata Calabria and Sicily. Historically Southern Italy has been a very poor and rudimentary country characterized by sharp contrasts: the poorest parts of society lived mainly on wheat and vegetables while the nobility of the Regno delle Due Sicilie fed on luxurious and refined food.

The warm Mediterranean climate which lasted for much of the year ensured that the soil was constantly fertile and that cereals and vegetables were continually grown ensuring a constant and varied food supply.
