Known for its historic forts monuments and wonders such as the Ajanta and Elora caves modern Maharashtra was initially a part of the Mauryan Empire. It was then ruled by several southern kingdoms before falling to invading Mughals. It eventually found a common identity united by Chhatrapthi Shivaji founder of the modern Maratha Empire.
