Fried Green Plantains – Best Tostones Recipe

The process of making tostones is quite unique. First the plantains are cut into pieces about an inch thick (2.5 cm). These pieces are then fried whole in plenty of oil until done. After they are removed from the oil they are flattened by crushing them; I still do it like my grandmother did with a river stone I found for this purpose but you can also flatten them with a mallet until they are about 1 centimeter thick (about 1/3 inch thick).

Then they are covered with a paste of garlic and salt and then fried again. And voilà they are ready crispy and super tasty!

Now you may be wondering how and when to eat tostones? Tostones can be eaten on their own or as a side dish with various types of meat. One of the most famous variations of this recipe is beach tostones; instead of cutting the plantains into small pieces halved plantains are used. After the whole process they are served covered with coleslaw and seafood fried shrimp being a popular choice. This Caribbean delicacy is highly appreciated and is a very popular dish served in beach restaurants.
