Trader Joe's New Snacks Taste Test

Patty Lee is a lifestyle writer and editor based in New York City. Her work has appeared on Kitchn The Spruce Eats Thrillist Food Network and more.

Growing up I spent a lot of time at my grandmother’s apartment on the Lower East Side of New York City stopping by on Sunday afternoons after running errands in nearby Chinatown. I remember watching old Studio Ghibli films on VHS and snacking on treats I now fondly associate with my childhood: chocolate-covered Pocky sticks sweet and spicy haw flakes wrapped in rolls shaped like quarters and Danish butter cookies that came in the iconic blue Royal Dansk tins.

The real highlight of the day was when the candy box appeared. This only happened occasionally unless it was Chinese New Year and it was guaranteed to appear which made the candy feel even sweeter. It was filled with a varied selection of Chinese Japanese American and European candy and two in particular always caught my eye: the shiny foil-wrapped Werther's Originals and the neon green guava candies.
