Simple Traditional White Sangria | Minimalist Baking Recipes

The earliest versions of sangria are thought to have originated over 2000 years ago when Romans planted vineyards as they traveled through the Iberian Peninsula. And because drinking water was unsafe it was often fortified with wine herbs and spices.

Let’s fast forward to the early 18th and 19th centuries when versions of what we now know as sangria were being made in England and France. Eventually the drink was popularized in the U.S. at the 1964 New York World’s Fair.

Despite its worldwide popularity and general association with Spain there is no official formula for sangria in Spain and local restaurants often serve a drink called tinto de verano a simple mix of red wine ice cream and lemon soda or casera (sweetened soda water). So while some Spaniards enjoy sangria it is a more popular drink among tourists.
