Reports of trains running over cows have hampered rail operations, increasing the risk of rail accidents, including derailments. This also endangers the safety of passengers and may lead to disruption of railway traffic and loss of railway property, etc.
In accordance with the provisions of the Railways Act 1989, livestock owners are liable to punishment under section 154 (Endangering the safety of persons traveling by rail by willful act or omission, punishable imprisonment for one year or a fine or both) and under the Railways Act, 1989. Section 147 (Tression and refusal to desist from trespass, punishable with imprisonment for 6 months or with fine of Rs. 1,000 or with both). Recently, the much-publicized Mumbai Central – Gandhinagar – Capital Vande Bharat Express train faced controversy over cases of cattle crushing damaging the nose of the train.
