The main event of Ubuntu 24.04 is GNOME 46, if you have improved notifications, which can be expanded or collapsed, and they will now show a small symbolic icon next to their title. Even more interesting, you get experimental variable refresh rate support. It is not enabled by default, you will need to use dconf to enable it.

Fractional scaling has also improved, with fonts now appearing less blurry and correctly aligned when using fractional scaling, and you can now connect to a GNOME user via RDP, au instead of having to remotely access a session where someone was already logged in.

Nautilus, the file manager, finally allows you to change the file path by clicking on the path bar, it will also search faster, and throughout the file system by default now file transfers are now moved to the sidebar, and you can also change a folder's icon in that folder's properties panel. Finally, you also have a new option to change how dates are displayed.

The main system settings have also been slightly changed, with a new /"system/" page, the default apps have been merged into the main /"apps/" settings page, which also includes the default actions you can configure when you insert removable media. .

Mouse and touchpad settings now let you configure how you trigger the right-click, and there's a new Mouse Test page to make sure these settings work for you. You can also disable the touchpad while typing.

GNOME Online Accounts also received some love for its backend: it now uses the default browser for authentication into accounts. You can also add a WebDAV account, or a personal Microsoft account, which will give you access to your OneDrive storage directly from Nautilus.

Ubuntu 24.04 ships with kernel 6.8, the latest currently available. The bottom line here is the new P-state drivers, which means your Intel CPUs will be able to reach their advertised boost speeds, but also using them on laptops should provide better battery life, which you have an AMD or Intel processor, especially since Ubuntu 24.04 now uses better power profiles based on these new P State drivers.

Ubuntu is also moving to Netplan, a network management tool that shouldn't change anything for regular users who just connect to wifi, but will certainly improve the lives of people who need to create complex network setups.

For gamers, you also get a better experience here: the virtual memory mapping limit was increased by a factor of 16 in 24.04, meaning games that might crash on launch or after a few hours of play won't do it anymore. , at least if the crash was related to them trying to reclaim a lot of memory. This is a change that Arch also made recently.

Another interesting change is that any services affected by a library update will be automatically restarted, to ensure that these services will run with the latest application security patches, it is said. This is more important for servers than desktops, but it's a nice change, which you can turn off if you don't like it.
