You can easily do this with lightdm-set-defaults if you prefer not to modify
lightdm.conf manually:
sudo /usr/lib/lightdm/lightdm-set-defaults –autologin /"USER/"
It will not set the automatic login timeout, but it defaults to 0 in the
code anyway, so you don't need to define it.

For Ubuntu 14.04, create the file:
/etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/12-autologin.conf
and add:
[Default seat]
autologin-useryouruser

Find the /"User Accounts/" app. Select the account you want
auto connect Toggle the auto connect switch to On
This should do the job.

I can confirm this works for 16.04.
Using your favorite editor, edit /usr/share/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/60-
lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf.
Add autologin-userxxxx to the file, for example:
[Seat:*]
greeter-sessionlightdm-gtk-greeter
autologin-userwmurphy
Don't forget to also set the No login request option under Users & Groups.

You can do this without modifying configuration files: go to system settings.
User accounts, click /"Unlock/" and enter your password, then click the button
next to /"Automatic connection/":

An alternative to Alin's answer is to create a /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf file
and add the following content:
[Default seat]
autologin-userYOUR USER
autologin-user-timeout0
ubuntu user session
# Uncomment the following, if you are running Unity
#greeter-sessionunity-greeter
The next time you boot, the automatic login should work as expected.
