Uji and Matcha

Uji and Matcha

HomeCooking Tips, RecipesUji and Matcha

A few days ago we took a short day trip to the land of Matcha. Uji is known for producing the best Matcha in Japan since the 14th century. It’s not a “must see” per se but it’s an easy 30 minute train ride from Kyoto and it was just so beautiful. We wandered the small main street saw a (quite touristy) tea ceremony drank some frothy matcha and had a nice cha-soba lunch.

Best and Worst Amazon Matcha Powders

So ridiculously beautiful…

I’ve had Chazuke (also called Ochazuke) at least three times on this trip so far. It’s a soupy rice dish with dashi and green tea. My favorite is the vegetarian version with umeboshi… definitely one for the “I’ll make it at home” list. The green tea soba at this restaurant (Itokyuemon) was also good.

Matcha ice cream is really good (and generally the same) everywhere – you see it everywhere you look in Uji and Kyoto. The best we’ve had so far was at Ippodo in Kyoto. That reminds me – stay tuned for a post on our general recommendations for Kyoto. We’re back in Tokyo now so (by request) a very linky post about Kyoto is in the works.
