Four years ago I was home for a few days between book tours and had about 3 trillion groceries to buy. But I was also hungry (because good food is the first thing to go when I’m busy) and I really wanted a nice salad (because vegetables are the first thing you eat when you travel a lot). I didn’t want to eat it out of a takeout container on my lap or in a hurry. I just wanted to eat it off a plate like a civilized person does with water in a glass not a plastic bottle. The urge was overwhelming and I looked up and saw that I was standing right in front of the Union Square Cafe and thought “Why not?”

Slow Cooker Union Square Cafe Bar Nuts

Do you ever go out to eat alone? No way. When I had the freedom to do this more often I always felt awkward and uneasy and now that I’m old enough not to care we only occasionally have the luxury of going out without two little people and cups of Cheerios and certainly not alone you know sitting at a bar reading a book like one of those grown-ups you always thought you were supposed to be? But this time I did. The salad was perfect. The bread was warm. The bartender convinced me (I’m sure I was terribly hard to convince) to have a glass of wine and 35 minutes later I was back on my errands happy and fed and cared for vowing to do this more often even though I don’t.

I’ve been thinking about this because The Union Square Cafe is reopening this week and even though it’s been twenty-six years since the cookbook was published the nut recipe in the book is still as easy to make and addictive as ever. It seems hard to imagine that such simple ingredients—a pat of butter brown sugar salt cayenne pepper and chopped rosemary—can transform even the unloved Brazil nut into something you can’t stop eating but that’s what a timeless recipe does. I hope it becomes your new holiday habit too.
