This week, Amazon Alexa Routines received two very nice upgrades. The first was the ability to name your routines. A small improvement but very useful once you have more than just one routine.

The next update, however, was a much bigger deal! Routines now have the ability to trigger IFTTT recipes as actions. You can now create locally triggered routines on devices and then trigger cloud routines created by IFTTT.

What does this mean from a practical point of view? You can now create an IFTTT recipe that sends you an email, for example when your child says "Alexa, I'm coming home from school." This initial voice trigger would be an Alexa routine that would execute an IFTTT recipe that would send you an email using one of the IFTTT platform's many services. You could then have a secondary action in the Alexa routine that prompts the echo device to say "I sent an email to your parents to let them know."

There are definitely a lot of cool things you can do with this new feature because the IFTTT platform is quite robust. Another thing I immediately thought of was connecting it to Home Assistant.

Before this, in order to "link" Alexa routines to Home Assistant, I normally used input booleans that would show up as Smart Home devices in the routines. Turn them on, then ask Home Assistant to do something accordingly after seeing the device status change. Now, with the addition of IFTTT Actions, you can leverage webhooks.

Alexa Routine to IFTTT to Home Assistant Webhook. Of course. It's a bit Rube Goldberg but we are still very much in the enthusiastic phase of Home Automation. 🙂
