The technique of curing meat with salt and spices to preserve it is believed to have been around since the Roman Empire. Spicy sausages were made in Italy at the time and pepperoni is thought to have originated in the United States as an adaptation of Italian versions. Pepperoni appeared in New York City delis and pizzerias around 1919 and is now many people's favorite pizza topping!
