For our final taste test we’re taking on one of my favorite things to spread on waffle toast or fill donuts with: gianduja spread! Say what? These spreads have become colloquially known as “Nutella spreads.” Much like Microplane has become synonymous with grater-graters Nutella has now become a catch-all term for this chocolate-hazelnut spread category. While Nutella doesn’t technically contain enough hazelnuts to be classified as a gianduja it’s the entry-level brand for most Americans who enjoy this spread. According to the European Union “gianduja” should contain at least 20-40% finely ground hazelnuts so we’ve expanded the taste test category to include a variety of chocolate-hazelnut spreads.

In a twist this taste test includes brands you might not find in your local grocery store. Your favorite stores will likely carry Nutella Caffarel and a few others. Many of these spreads are imported from Italy and can be found in Italian specialty stores. If you still can’t find them (and some of them—some of them—are definitely worth finding!) they’re all easily available if you order them online. I went down a chocolate-hazelnut rabbit hole and looked at over 30 different spreads and ordered the top-rated options. The rest came from Eataly which has an awesome selection of highly-rated chocolate-hazelnut spreads (and bars but a team can only eat so much sugar in one day!).
