If you’re looking to cut down on meat you might be eyeing the plant-based nuggets in the freezer section of your grocery store. But once you pick up a bag you’ll find there are almost too many options to choose from. So which meatless nuggets taste the most like the real thing? I tasted six of the most popular brands to find out.
We pitted the tried and true (Morning Star Quorn Gardein) against the newer brands on the market (Impossible Simulate Daring) to find the champion. These nuggets varied in protein source protein content and coating but were all air fryer cooked for maximum crispiness. I chose these brands based on how widely available they were and how much I had heard about them through word of mouth.
There are as many great options as there are but some of the nuggets fell short in flavor texture and presentation. The “chicken” texture ranged from stringy to spongy to dense and the ability of the crust to cling to the protein was a huge factor in my book (think about it who likes an onion ring that just slides right out of its crispy casing??).
