Welsh rarebit is a curious name for a dish with such a story. Some sources even date early versions back to the Middle Ages. Ironically "rarebit" is of English origin (not Welsh) and is known to be a corruption of "rabbit" and it was probably all the English teasing the Welsh about their apparent love of grilled cheese and their inability to afford real rabbit. Neighbourly bickering at its finest!
