Easy carob chips to make at home!

Carob chips can be compared to the cool older cousin of chocolate chips. They are not as sweet or rich but have their own toasted nutty flavor. Carob is similar to chocolate but intriguingly different and is an ingredient in its own right that deserves a spot in your baking pantry.

Carob is the product of a Mediterranean tree that is processed into powder or chips and resembles chocolate. The pods of the carob tree are crushed into a pulp that is then dried roasted and ground into a powder. The powder can be used as is or processed into chips much like chocolate chips.

Carob has a rich roasted flavor that is similar to chocolate but not quite the same. The plant source of carob grows in pods on a tree in the same way as chocolate. Unlike chocolate carob is naturally sweet and has no bitter note. Because of this carob powder and chips usually do not require added sugar to achieve the desired flavor and sweetness. The flavor is milder than chocolate and does not have the characteristic sharpness of chocolate but instead offers a nutty flavor.
