Damp Sam shares 7 great tips for spotting damp, identifying the cause of damp and how to avoid it. Discover industry tips and tricks to solve your damp problems and prevent them from recurring.

KEY POINTS TO REMEMBER

If you have a damp spot on your wall and it's quite high, do a quick "scratch test" to determine what type of moisture it is and whether it's coming from the inside or the outside . If the underside is pink and dry, then you know it's coming from within.

If black mold is forming on a window, it means that there is a lack of adequate ventilation within the property.

Older Victorian properties with cellars and brick floors can often suffer from rising water due to sagging pipes.

Dry rot often appears in attics, on floors and in attics and closets when conditions are right.

BEST MOMENTS

“If it’s just surface damp or condensation, you know it’s coming from outside so it could be rising or penetrating damp.”

“Always check the isolation switch first.”
