Our bodies need a variety of different vitamins and minerals to thrive including eight different B vitamins. And of all of these vitamins vitamin B12 is perhaps the most popular. But what exactly is B12 and should you be taking it every day? B12 supplements are often marketed as boosting your energy and mood but this vitamin plays a much more important role in the body. It’s an essential vitamin needed to produce healthy red blood cells that support nerve and brain function and make DNA the genetic material found in all of your cells. While most people get enough B12 from a variety of foods taking a supplement to prevent a deficiency generally won’t hurt. Additionally supplementing with B12 may be beneficial for some populations including those who follow a vegan or vegetarian diet or have conditions that cause B12 malabsorption.
