For some whiskey is simply a great base for a tasty cocktail or highball. Others however take the drink a little more seriously and prefer to enjoy it without the addition of lemon juice egg whites or a fizzy soda. For these drinkers a whiskey stone is perhaps the ultimate tool for the best chilled glass of alcohol. Now you may be wondering what it is and what it is used for. After all rocks generally do not belong in drinks unless they are of the ice variety. But in this case you may want to reconsider.

Whisky Stones! Do they really cool your drink? Our test.

Whiskey stones are frozen and placed in your glass to chill your drink without diluting its flavor. Despite their vintage Stone Age appearance they’re a relatively new innovation having been invented in 2007. However some theories suggest that they were used in Scotland to chill whiskey without diluting it as far back as the early 20th century. These stones were (allegedly) plucked from a river and they weren’t cut into a cube shape like many modern options are today. Despite their recent origins however whiskey stones should definitely be a part of your home bar kit especially if you want to get the most out of your whiskey.

The idea behind whiskey stones is pretty simple: they’re used in place of ice to keep your drink cold. Most on the market are made from non-porous materials like soapstone granite or (not stone) stainless steel. They’re stored in the freezer and then placed in a glass of whiskey just like you would with ice. But unlike ice they help to chill your drink without diluting it. Because whiskey stones don’t contain water there’s no risk of them melting into your drink or changing its flavor.

This is a particularly attractive feature for those who want to experience their whisky in an unadulterated way without the water dilution altering the unique flavour profile of the spirit. Now this may not matter if you’re simply using the spirit as a mixer or if you’re just a casual drinker. But for those who want to get the most out of their bottle whisky stones are definitely a worthy investment.
